Omegna
Omegna (Vemenia) born as a free
town council in 1384, and in the
time it becomes the centre of a
big business activity in the area
between Lake Maggiore and Cusio,
Strona Valley and the nearest Sesia
Valley and Ossola Valley. From the
middle of '800 born some of the
most important industries like Ferriera
and Fabbricone. At the beginning
of '900 other pionners (as Cane
from Strona Valley and Lagostina
from Pedemonte) transform it into
a lively industrial centre, and
also population increase thanks
to immigrant labour. In 1913 Omegna
was connected to Pallanza by an
electric tram. In 1939 Omegna becomes
a city. During the 2nd War began
in this area the resistance of Novara
against Nazi-fascism, and it continued
in the following long months, among
death and success. Omegna was one
of the basis of liberation of Ossola
in September 1944. Today is the
centre of a big industrial activity
characterized by firms of house
hold appliances (like Lagostina,
Bialetti, Alessi) and top firms. |
